  • France Family holidays

The UK's European neighbour is a long-time rival, but a friendly one, and family holidays to France allow you and your youngsters to experience that Gallic pride first hand. It's a nation of elegant architecture, engaging art and music, and of course the home of continental gastronomy, so any time spent in France is likely to leave your senses feeling thoroughly indulged and your stomach feeling full too.

    Pommes Brits

There are certain snacks and recipes you just have to try during family holidays in France, even if it is a cliche to eat them as an English tourist. Steak frites is one of the usual suspects, reputedly invented in France (although Belgium also claims to have created it) and consisting quite simply of a piece of carefully cooked steak with a side of pommes frites, or French fries. You might also want to try a croque monsieur - a sandwich of ham and cheese, usually made in brioche, and then fried or baked.

    Lush landscape

Considering how close it is to the UK, the landscape you'll get to see during cheap family holidays in France is nothing short of stunning. Steep cliff-sided river gorges provide the backdrop to kayaking trips that the kids can join in with too, wooded valleys offer an adventure as you explore the footpaths that wind along the valley floor, and of course the pristine sands of the French Riviera are there if you choose to visit France for a beach holiday rather than an inland city break. It's a diverse geography that covers all the bases, and all you need to do is decide where in the country you want to go, in order to enjoy beaches, vineyards, ski resorts and a seemingly endless list of other types of destination too.

    Getting there

There are plenty of different ways to get to your family holiday in France, so give some careful thought to your travel plans. Flights are fast and direct, but you might want to give the kids the excitement of a ferry crossing or of riding through the Channel Tunnel. Either of those options can allow you to take your car with you too, and if you feel confident driving on the 'wrong' side of the road, this gives you an easy way of getting around so that you can explore France more easily.

Why France is so great for families

The Eiffel Tower, Provence, the Alps – just three of countless top family attractions in France. Take the kids to see the sights in the nation's capital, learn to ski on a family break on the slopes, or simply soak up the southern sun on a one of thousands of superb beaches. That's what France family holidays can offer, and why it is one of the most popular family destinations in the world. And we haven't even mentioned the food, the museums and the stunning countryside. We'll let you find out all that for yourself.
